SMS and media mobilisation…

telehones.jpgCommunication in India witnessed a new dimension added to its ‘PNT , STD and ISD’ image connections with the arrival of mobile phones. At the outset individuals had to pay as much as 24 rupees to receive calls on their phones. But then with the passage of time things began to change and with regulations, rules, governing bodies and laws in place, things started looking more systematic!

Providing electiricity, clean drinking water and telephone connections has been an integral part of every planning commission’s report in India. And over the years the populace has reconciled with the crawling progress towards these aspects(given the other committments of the government!)

Life after Mobile phones

Against this backdrop, arrived mobile and cellular phones in the 90’s, which meant amelioration of the majority in the years to come. And all this with the Government playing an ancilliary role. This was something that worked in government favor as well as the majority of the countrymen.

sms3.jpgWhere the ‘promised telephone lines’ of the goverment could not reach (as in the far flung areas) which even today calls for a considerable amount of time, effort and investment, the cellular / mobile revolution transcended such impediments. And in particular the GSM phones to start things off. Although in the present scenario, CDMA networks are stepping on the heat and linking the rural parts of India with the same steadfastness!

Offshoots of mobile revolution

With the mobile revolution’s booming growth of 47 % in the last couple of years, this device has transcended the ambit of a mere two way communication. It has become part of a larger picture in which masses have begun to have a say in the day to day affairs of life which affects them

The television industry seized the initiative and brought out the voice of the masses to the fore using cellular phones and telephones but majorily cellular. I would like to place this mobile revolution against the primitive form of feedback methods in TV shows using letters and postcards. Today the same process has transformed and has acquired a more dynamic look.

images1.jpgSMS, a product of the cellular revolution has emerged as a potent medium to mobilise masses. The classic example in this regard is the reopening of criminal cases of Priyadarshini Mattoo and Jessica Lall where the guilty were roaming scott free. A wave of furore swept the nation, thanks to Television acting as an amalgam in crystallising the impact generated by mass SMS. Yesterday, a prime accused in the Priyasarshini Mattoo case was sentenced to death.

Viewers and SMS

sms2.jpgWhat SMS and cellular telephony has done is empower the viewers and trasnform them from being merely passive receivers of content to mouthpiece of the society! The greatest asset of this mode of telephone communication is the SPEED, with which the opinion and verdict of the masses get registered and eventually reflected in the socio-political decisions concerning the country.

Future beckons

This is just one facet of the mobile revolution which has been tapped. With the internet boom, the next generation of media entertainment, search services, yellow pages and other such utilities consumer friendly services would be delivered, all at the press of a button- On your mobile devices( not your television sets!)

So watch out..

India’s energy worries…

The increasing demand for hydrocarbon fuels to propel the burgeoing growth rates of countries like China and India has caused the prices of oil to to move upwards. What existed at $ 20 per barrel now stands at close to $59 and some say this is just the beginning.

Why?

The primary reason for this is that major oil wells and oil rich countries are pumping oil to the maximum capacity. This means that oil wells with large capacities are operating at their maximum output.
Demand too has witnessed a sharp surge due to the growth in countries such as India and China. All this has led to the oil producing countries to increase their output to level out the demand supple effect.

Indian perspective

India has its share of worries too. The country is witnessing a growth rate of 13 % which is phenomenal and the last thing it would like is this growth being impeded due to rising oil prices. To some extent, it is to be blamed for this situation.
Lack of alternate fuel resources such as natural gas has increased the dependence on hydrocarbon fuels. Also, the country relies on imports for major part of its consumption. As a result, any fluctuation in the oil prices at a global level has repercussions on the Indian markets and domestic scenario as well.

Another reason is the high dependency on the hydrocarbon fuels such as petrol and diesel. With no recent strike in oil sites, the resources have not increased as compared to the demand.

Gearing for the future ?

The recent decision by the government to mix ethane with petrol seems optimistic but how far is it realistic, time will tell. The primary source of ethane is certain plants. So if Ethane has to be obtained to fuel the energy needs of the country then cultivating and harvesting these plants would need to happen. This process takes time and is not instantaneous as a result the plans would need time to be implemented. The other source is import which would imply costs to the country. The planning in this regard of the country seems to be behind its times.

A heartening move keeping the future in mind is the investment in exploration of oil fields in foreign regions such as Russia and some other Balkan states. This is indeed optimistic and an aggressive move by companies such as ONGC and others.

The growth rate being experienced by India is something that is vital not only for the country’s development but for the sub-continent. And in this light, a setback to the energy needs of the country would hurt it the most.

Planning needs to be fast and quick to aver such a crises….

Indian team needs good fast bowlers..

Watching Indian team slowly collapse against the Aussies, a thought crossed my mind. The other day I read about the success of reality shows such as Nach Baliye and Jhalak Dikhla Ja somewhere. Well, if millions of Indians can tune in to watch such shows, is it possible to have reality show which seeks to unearth bowling talent from far flung and remote areas of India through a TALENT HUNT CONTEST?
shoaibcrop-9501.jpgThe reason behind my worry is the absence of a string of lightening quick fast bowlers who can make the batsmen go weak in their knees. We have seen what a Shane Bond, Brett Lee or Shoaib Akhtar can do to an opposition. India needs a couple of fast bowlers who can join this elite category. West Indies reigned supreme in the world of cricket primarily due to their pace battery which comprised the likes of Marshal, Roberts and Garner. The reason behind my worry is the absence of a string of who can make the batsmen go weak in their knees. We have seen what a Shane Bond, Brett Lee or Shoaib Akhtar can do to an opposition. India needs a couple of fast bowlers who can join this elite category. West Indies reigned supreme in the world of cricket primarily due to their pace battery which comprised the likes of .
For this we need to search and scout for talents. We need to dig out alleys, small towns and cities where cricket breeds and flourishes in India. There exists talent which does not find the resource to reach the final destination. That is where a talent show can make a difference. The incentive on offer for such talents through sponsorships would also be a lucrative deal for them to come to the fore. And the greatest reason above all would be the Pride and Playing for the country!
The other reason for such a talent show is the gaping hole with regard to the bench strength in the bowling of Indian cricket team.

A string of bowlers are cooling their heels, zaheer khan.jpgsome are injured while others are recovering. The lagarkar.jpgist is growing by the day Laxmipathy Balaji, Zaheer Khan, Ashish Nehra, Munaf Patel and the most recent inclusion- Ajit Agarkar. If experienced bowlers like these keep getting hurt do we have a good line of bowlers to fill in their slots?
In a country where cricket has displaced hockey in terms of popularity and fan following, where people literally idolize cricketers, it becomes important for the team and game to develop.
Cricket has outgrown from this image of a sport to an entertainment event and is rated equally or maybe more than reality shows on a given day. Thus a talent show for the betterment of the game using media is not a bad deal after all. Media’s power should be harnessed for the benefit of the game and the Indian cricket team.

Indian hopes in Champions Trophy’06 (Oct 29) - Ashes!…

ponting.jpgThe Australian team from its performance on Sunday proved why they are reckoned as Champions in the world of cricket. And from the same match, Indian cricket team’s ineptness surfaced once again.

Although the Indian team posted a total of 250 runs on the board, it seemed to be definitely short of 30-40 runs. These 30-40 runs is what eventually cost the Indian team the match. Not to mention the horrible bowling performance which made the team cut a sorry figure in front of buoyant fans.

The batsmen clicked but failed to learn any lesson from the previous fixtures and encounters. The team failed to string in a valuable partnership. Neither did any batsman drop the anchor and play a patient knock. Sehwag and Dravid looked in good touch but the team failed to get a big partnership.

Suresh Raina.jpgAll the players got out when the team needed them to settle down. In the process they made way for new players who took more time to settle down. All this while the Indian team kept losing wickets which meant there was nobody left to step on the accelerator at the end of the innings.

dhoni.jpgIt would be unfair to some extent to blame Dhoni completely. He tried but in the absence of a cushion basmen to follow him, he too had to play cautiously and that meant fewer risks. He appeared to be a ‘lion’ in a circus, tamed by circumstances and by the follies of his team mates.

sreesanth.jpgThe batsmen need to take responsibility for today’s defeat as do the Indian bowlers with the lone exception of Sreesanth. I would have to admit that this lad is mentally strong and showed that he can deliver the goods even at a short notice. He took two wickets and bowled with some heart, something the other bowlers including Harbhajan seemed to have left behind in the dressing room!

Pathan.jpgPathan needs to rethink his role in the Indian team. Is he a bowler who can bat or a batsman who has lost out his bowling prowess?? He seemed ineffectual with the bat and shoddy with the ball. The ground reality what Pathan needs to understand is that he is not an express quicky like Brett Lee. He is a genuine swing bowler and can do far more damage at his pace swinging the cricket ball rather than pitching it short and getting hammered like today. I think its time to give Pathan a break and let him settle in his groove.

harbhajan.jpgWorrying news for the Indian camp with injuriy to Agarkar. The bowling looked depleted and the side looked to be defeated even before the match began. Munaf lacked pace due to an injury, Harbhajan lacked the guile and turn and Pathan as usual was spraying the ball both sides of the wicket.

Experimentation is good, when it is taken in the stride. Chappel’s experimentation has brought numerous loopholes in the teams batting and bowling departments. Now it is time to plug them, otherwise, it would hardly be a surprise if India is reduced to ashes in the next tournament too.

Calypso reigns over India..Champions Trophy, Oct ‘06

scwind02.jpgIndian team’s defeat at the hands of the West Indies on the 25th of October match has brought out numerous lessons for India. One could say that the team which looks good on paper failed once again to deliver with its batting and bowling.
Playing Cautiously

The tournament has not witnessed one lamblasting innings till now. Surprised..? Quite not! Well, those tried playing perished, be it Jayasuriya , Astle or Sehwag.

The wickets in the Champions trophy till now have not had the bounce and pace to facilitate shot making. As a result such explosive innings have become highly improbable. Openers need to come to terms with this and should keep in mind that the need of the hour is an average of 4-5 runs within the first 15 overs, i.e 60-75 runs without losing too many wickets.

sehwag.jpgSehwag in particular needs to reassess and get his shot selection is place. The way he got out in the last match againt the Windies -dragging the ball onto his stumps revealed his inability to adapt to the conditions. Playing extravagent shots on a pitch which does not have an even bounce is stupidity. This does raise some concerns but I think he should have learnt his lesson by now.

Being Realistic

As I mentioned, this Champions trophy is not about 300+ scores, its about 175- 220. Teams need to be realistic about the totals which they intend to put on the board. The pitch that have been provided have been a bit dicey and as a result scoring on them has not been easy.

Quickly adapting to the conditions

fleming.jpgWe have seen that several teams have had a batting order collapse at the top including India in the matches till now. But those which came to terms with the conditions and played sensibly went on to win the match. This fact can be had from skipper Stephen Fleming’s knock who steered his team out of trouble. The same can be said about Mark Boucher’s contribution in the match against Pakistan.

The Indian team needs one contribution from its batting order which lhas looked heavy on paper till now. With the likes of Sehwag, Tendulkar, Dravid and Yuvraj in the ranks, the team needs atleast one of them to rise to the ocassion and bat though the innings when wickets fall quickly.

This did not happen in the match against the Windies where all the batsmen scored but failed to make a big score. This cost the team the additonal 20-30 runs! Such a mistake is criminal and could cost India a place in the semi finals.

Invaluable Partnerships

dravid batting.jpgThat partnerships are vital is a known fact but they have become quistissential in this Champions Trophy. I think, Dravid will have to take the onus and ensure that he bats through the innings and strings in partnerships with other batsmen. We have seen that he is a cement who can bind the likes of Yuvraj and Tendulkar.

Disciplined Bowling

munaf patel.jpgThe Indian attack lacked the bite in the previous match. The seamers failed to make an impression with the only exception of Munaf Patel who bowled with some consistency. The Indian bowling has suffered another setback in the form of an injury to Agarkar at a crucial juncture in the tournament.

By not putting the ball in the right areas in the previous match, the seamers failed to make an impression. Bereft of pace, its the line and length which can make a difference in a bowling attack. We saw that in the match between Pakistan and South Africa. An indisciplined attack not only demotivates the team’s efforts but negates all the good work done by the bowlers and fielders. Hence the Indian bowlers, particularly the seamers would have to bowl a good line to the Australian bowlers to get some purchase from the wicket and make an impression.

The forthcoming match against the Australians is a do or die for both the teams. India’s performance will show how much they have learnt from their performance in their previous outing. To beat an Australian side is difficult but not impossible as proven by the Windies.

The mantra for India is needs -be flexible, gritty and disciplined to beat Australians..
