Pakistan bowlers dope-Ignominy Or shrewd calculation?

shoaibcrop-950.jpg

The recent exit of two Pakistani fast bowlers, Shoaib Akhtar and Md. Asif from the prestiguous ICC Champions trophy on dope charges came as a shock to many people around the world. But was it really a shock?

The two bowlers were tested positive for consuming a banned drug nandrolone which enhances the performance of the players who consume the drug. Not only does it help them in training hard, it also reduces their fatigue levels.

The two players were whisked off in a hurried fashion a day before the team played its first match against Sri Lanka which it won in an emphatic manner. But the question that lingers around is, what does one make of this entire issue?

Shrewd Move

I feel that this was a calculated move by the Pakistan Cricket Board to ‘find’ the players guilty on charges of dope consumption. A calculated and worked out move, this ensured that the International Cricket Council was outside the issue and had virtually no say in the matter. This also brought the issue under the sole jurisdiction of the Pakistan Cricket Board.

This means the Board would have the final say in this issue. The dynamics suggest that given the World Cup in 2007, the board could place a short ban and ensure that the extent of the punishment is minimal. This would ensure that the two bowlers are available for the World Cup in 2007.

Saving from greater damages

Had the ICC found the players guilty the extent of the damage would have been much more severe and the players could have faced a one year ban from Internation Cricket as Shane Warne did. So the Pakistan Board made the gamble of taking them out of the Champions Trophy and ensuring that they are available for the World Cup!

With regard to infamy, one could say that Pakistan Cricket has taken it in its stride!! Be it match fixing controversy or ball tampering allegations which have engulfed the team, the team has had a brush with controversy time and time again. So such an issue should not bother them as they have learnt over a period of time to live with them.

With these allegations coming to the surface, finally its cricket that has suffered. But such acts and the players involved if proved by investigations should be severely reprimanded to protect the interest of the sport and also to ensure that no other player commits such an act.

Calypso fire.. ICC Champions Trophy, Oct 18,’06

West Indies defeated world champions Australia and pulled a surprise of sorts! The team with a good number of youngsters and bereft of Chanderpaul’s services made the best of the conditions and got the basics right.

Winning the toss was key and Brian Lara made sure that he made the most of it by opting to bat. The Windies batsmen again proved their vulnerability to some good Australian bowling and were four wickets down by the 15 over. Then it was left to the seasoned campaigner Brian Lara and a beleagured Runako Morton to steer the ship from danger. They weathered the storm well and ensured that a respectable total was posted on the board.

One could say that the Australians flexibility with regard to their batting order proved to be a cause of concern for them as they seemed unsure about who should bat where. Watson opened the batting and departed without contributing to the score. But the prize catch for the Windies was the wicket of captain Ponting which I feel turned on the screws on the Australians!

After that it got tougher and tougher with the passage of every over and eventually the Aussies collapsed, thanks to some good bowling at the death by Bravo and Taylor. The batsmen counsumed too many balls and failed to keep the score board ticking with regular singles.

An intersting feature of the match was an animated Chris Gayle and his little brickbat with Michael Clarke! The usually calm and serene batsman keep talking and making gestures on the field to Michael Clarke in a bid to unsettle him. Although Clarke seemed undeterred with the whole drama, the audience got to see the other side of Chris Gayle!

Just as Pakistan held its nerves against the Lankans on Wednesday, the Windies too didn’t get ruffled with their performance and eventually won the game.

A well fought contest, it was won by the team that performed better on that day!…

Inculcating Thoughts…

thinkingman.gif“The best way to get a good idea is to get a lot of good ideas” - Linus Pauling , Nobel Physicist

Remember the days when you took tests in school? We were given a set of chapters to read from and answer the questions pertaining to those questions in the form of multiple choice answers. At all times there was one correct answer and our minds rallied to figure that out. Over a period of time, our minds got fine tuned to this process. So, now when a situation arises or when we face an issue, our mind thinks like a one way lane many a times.

Another simple way of assessing the path of your thought process is:

  • Take pen and a piece of paper.
  • Draw a circle and a line.

Now look at it, the first instance when you look at it, it may appear to a be a line and a circle. But when you spend time thinking about it, you will start getting different ideas, some may think of it to be a golf club while some other may think of it to be an alien ship even!…

So, it all depends on the extent to which you make your mind tick. The more the thoughts that flow in, the more the ideas you would get. This will lead to greater ideas and solutions to problem both at your workplace and home.

This would also expand your thought proces beyond the what I call the ‘one solution syndrome’! Today, its important to have sharp, quick and feasible solutions to issues and problems. And these come about from ideas and thoughts.

So, start thinking and in the process you will generate the fodder for your mind!

Pakistan coast home…ICC Champions trophy,Oct 17,’06

Pakistan defeated Sri Lanka in what could be called ‘the first respectable match’ of the Champions Trophy in terms of the scores today . The team successfully chased the Lankan total with four wickets in hand and one over to spare.

The Sri lankans posted a healthy total of 254 and looked like winning all throught the game. But their hopes were dashed by Razzak who made the most of the lifeline given to him by Dilshan. Dlishan dropped Razzak when he was on 4, and scripted the downfall for his own team by that folly.

The Pakistan team had a lot on stake. With the exit of its two pacemen, Shoib Akhtar and Mohd. Asif, on charges of dope consumption, the team had its back against the wall. But that is when the Pakistanis do well! They came out with a young cohesive outfit and played to their potential.

At the end of the day, they held their nerves and emerged victorius owing to some healthy partnerships and hard hitting.

One could have to say that the Sri Lankans lost the game rather than the Pakistanis winning it. All said and done, it was a good match, well contested!…

Understanding your mind..

” The happiest person is the person who thinks the most interesting things”
-Timothy Dwight, 19th Century educator

Our mind is like a donkey. Just as a donkey resists when you push it similarly our mind too will resist. Also when you pull the donkey, it will resist. The more you push, the more it will resist. If you still push, it will kick you! So how do you maneuver a donkey?
The only way is to move it is by holding in front it and then the donkey will come with you. The same applies for our mind too. We cannot manipulate the mind. We have to convince the mind. You cannot force our mind into doing anything. We need to use the tool of encouragement.

When you sit and start meditating, you will not be able to control the mind. Numerous thoughts will cross your mind and only as time goes by would you be able to control it. This is because if you focus your mind on something for the first time, you cannot hold the focus for long. For example, if you practice jogging or running for the first time; you will not be able to sustain for long. As a result you could slip back into your old habit too.

This is when you need to use the emotional component of interest on the subject in order to convince your mind into doing it. You need to induce the emotional value for the activity. In the absence of the same, you will not be able to change your old behaviour.
Interest on a subject will strengthen your mental muscles. You will observe that you would pay more attention to a subject which interests you. If you cultivate an interest in your task or job, then your attitude towards it will be positive and you will be more inclined to do it.

In order to cultivate an interest on a thing, you need to ask the following questions:
What will it do for me?
Why is it important for me?
What will I get if I do it?
What will I lose if I don’t do it?

Once you create an interest on a thing, you will be happy to do it. To try this thing, choose an activity you have been postponing for a long time and ask these above questions and sincerely answer and meditate on the various advantages that will accrue to you. List to them and ponder.
Once you mentally visualize yourself getting all the benefits, by maneuvering your mind you will experience the difference in your mind.
