Shane Warne..end of an era…

over and out!.jpg

The retirement of Shane Warne comes as a disappointment for his fans across the world. But everyone has to resign to fate and so this was on cards!

warner rejoicing!.JPG

Shane Warne is unarguably one of the greatest leg spinners the world of cricket has seen. In fact it is his bowling which came as a lifeline to ailing art of leg spin bowling and lifted it from dumps.

A character on the field, his off the field ‘antiques’ ensured that he was in the thick of controversies and limelight. But every time a challenge ‘on the field’ surfaced, there was Warne upto the task.

warne bwling.jpgWhat makes him special is his simple bowling action and the degree of turn which he extracts from wickets. Even mundane wickets which do not offer help to spin around the world such as those in England and South Africa, too responded to his bowling and offered lots of assistance!
His bowling’s uniqueness is the ‘rip’ which he imparts on the bowl. A leg spinner’s turn on the ball is directly proportional to the number of revolutions which he imparts on the ball. This coupled with some others aspects like use of crease, trajectory and loop makes his spin bowling a force to reckon!

It was the culmination of all these in a near perfect proportionthat has gone into the making of Warne. A short run up, simple action, a good pivot, an excellent trajectory and fascinating degree of turn is Warne encapsulated!

warnegatting.jpgWarne embarked in his cricketing career by playing against India but his moment of reckoning came when he got Mike Gatting in Ashes Series. That ball created history for the world saw something that had been lost for decades, a exemplary display of spin bowling with a young bowler extracting turn prodigiously. The ball has been judged as the “ball of the century”, as it pitched outside the leg stump and knocked the off stump of Mike Gatting who played a forward defensive shot. The dismissal left Gatting and the world spell bound. Viewers all over the world knew a leg spinner had arrived to fascinate and stay!

vistims!.jpgThe greatness of Warne lies in the fact that he has picked wickets all over the world and against all cricketing nations. Whether the pitch supports spin was irrespective for the fact is Warne has turned the ball on pitches unsuited for spin bowling.

Another great feature of his bowling was the way he set his batsmen up. Apart from prodigious turn, his googlies, top spinners and drifters left many batsmen around the world bamboozled. He is a bowler who can bowl six different type of deliveries in an over which goes to show the abundant talent he possesses as a leg spinner.

sachin tensulkar.jpgEnglish batsmen form the lion’s share amongst his victims while he has been relative unsuccessful against Indians. His hammering at the hands of Tendulkar when Australia toured India served as a delight to the fans. Warne himself acknowledged that Tendulkar’s treatment gave him nightmares for many a nights to come!

terry jenner.jpgI heard Terry Jenner once, who coached Shane Warne that ‘.. Leg spinners are a rare breed. Not every one is destined to be a leg spinner. It is those whom God taps on the head end up being leg spinners’.

Warne ful size.jpg

Very true indeed, for Warne is one bowler who enthralled and inspired an entire generation of fans and it will take another entire life for a bowler of his class to come!

Indian cricket team trimuphant in Johannesburg!..Dec’06

indian defeat SA 4.jpg

Indian cricket team finally pulled off a performance as a cohesive unit and achieved the unachievable- defeating the proteas in their own backyard for the first time in four tours! A fanstastic achievement indeed..!

What was heartening to see was the spirit and the pride shown by the players on the field. From Sreesanth to Ganguly each player showed nerves of steel and put on a awesome performance. This victory had a semblance to the victory in the test match over the Australian team when India toured Australia last time.

India defeat SA2.jpgGrit, perseverance, discipline and application were the ingredients which went into the making of the recipe -VICTORY! As I had mentioned in my previous post, the team had failed to apply themselves to the conditions provided to them and as a result had faltered in the one day series. But the heartening element after the one say series was their regrouping and bouncing back as a unit!

Indian batting for a change showed character and resilience.
Despite initial hiccups the middle order contributed with some sourav.jpggritty knoks from Sourav Ganguly who made his comeback in an emphatic manner with an unbeaten 51 runs along with contributions from Tendulkar and Dravid! VRV Singh’s burst in the innings at the end was a delight and was it was nice to see someone take the fight to the opposition!

sree.jpgThe bowlers really put up a brilliant performance. Lead by the young Sreesanth who picked up 8 wickets for the match, they maintained a tight line and length and made the batsmen commit the mistakes. It would be fair to say that they bowled India to victory! It was some sight to see South African wickets fall one after the other like a pack of cards. And in just 25 overs the entire team was bundled for a paltry score of 84 in their first innings.

VVS.jpg

Wasim Jaffer failed again as the Indian team lost his wicket early in the second innings though Sehwag went about his natural way and played a flurry of strokes before perisihing at the start. Then it was upto Mr. ‘Very Very Special’ Laxman to make his mark. He did the same with his classy stroke play and made a ecclestial 74 as he steadied the Indian ship with contributions from Tendulkar, Ganguly and Zaheer Khan. The Indian team set a target of 402 for the South Africans in the second innings. It was a pleasure to watch the sheer elegance and elan with which Laxman hit his boundaries. His straight drive with a mere flick of wrists for a boundary was a delight for the fans watching and had ‘grace’ written all over it!

Then it was the turn of the Indian bowlers who came back with lot of fire in their belly and removed three wickets by the end of the day. The next day, Sreesanth, Zaheer Khan and Anil Kumble with some clinical bowling display dismissed the entire South African team and wrapped the match in a emphatic fashion!

fans.jpgThere were celebrations in the Indian team’s dressing room as the players jumped around in joy. And why shouldn’t they, they came from behind and amidst all sorts of accusations did a David act against a Goliath !

India’s stellar performance made me recollect a quote of Winston Churchill-” kites rise highest against the wind , not with the wind!”
Well done India.. keep it up!…

Indian cricket team’s ‘test-escapade’ begins…Dec-06′

dravid.jpgThe first test between India and host South Africa gets underway today at the Wanderers in Johannesburg. The Indian captain who suffered an injury during the one day international series between the two sides addressed a press conference in a positive fashion. He asserted that the team still had a few tricks to surprise the opposition and it would be ‘dangerous to write the Indian team off’. But despite such statements, a feel of nerves could be felt.

A whitewash in the one day series has not done any good to irfan.gifthe morale of the Indian team which has rested a few players like Irfan Pathan. The team looked jitterey throughout its performance and was found wanting in pacy and bouncy conditions. One felt that they were like a pack of cards waiting to be blown away by a gusty gale of pace bowling!

sourav.jpg

Not too much has changed for the Indian team since then except for the inclusion of Sourav Ganguly. His inclusion does bolster the team’s batting line-up but one would have to see how he adapts to the short and rising ball. Ntini and Nel would certainly exploit Ganguly’s vulnerability against the rising ball. Dada would have to come with some plan!

sehwag.jpgAnother worry is the opening pair. I would have to admit that Sehwag in these conditions is not the best of batsman for the opener’s slot. Openers in such conditions should be the ‘Mike Atherton’ types who are judicious in their shot selection. A bang bang approach does not help a batsman at the top for he runs the risk of losing his wicket to an ordinary ball too. I would have preferred a batsman like an Akash Chopra instead of Sehwag to open with Jaffer as the duo could drop the anchor and provide a good start upfront.

zaheer khan.gifThe bowlers have a better deal as compared to the batsmen but they too will have to bowl out of their skins to get twenty wickets in an innings, a ‘feat’ that seems a distant reality at present. Lack of discipline and inconsistency is something bowlers would have to look out for in their performance. ‘It is not brief spells of excellence intertwined with erratic spells of insouciance that is required but prolonged spells of perseverance and application’!

sach.jpgAlthough the Indian batting looks formidable on paper, their reputation of being clay targets against a world class bowling attack on bowler friendly conditions is something we already know. The stage is set, the actors ready and another script of agony, discomfort and ignominy could await the Indian team and its batting lineup if it does not adapt to the conditions quickly!
Definitely the underdogs, the Indians would have to play like David to defeat a Goliath of an opposition waiting to maul them.

Name’s Bond - James Bond!.. Casino Royale

I saw Casino Royale and for once it didn’t appear to be one of those movies from the Bond factory!!

bond.jpgWhat I mean by this is the fact that there are lots of things which appeal to the viewer. Starting from the cast, Daniel Craig looks rugged, tough and macho, a trait his predecessors lacked to a great extent. But having said that they made up for that lacuna with some terrific romance and genteel seduction!

The Bond in Casino Royale is made to look different owing to the plot and the story and the movie could be termed as a genesis of James Bond -007. As a result it presents a more human side of this spy and for once James Bond looks beatable and susceptible. In other words, the movie shows a Bond who bleeds.

The action looks real and one gets a feel from the exchange casino10.jpgof blows between the hero and anti hero that there is a certain degree of authenticity in the exchange. This stands as some kind of a contrast to the previous Bond movies where James Bond draws the audience attention with his world class gadgets and equipment. That gives him some kind of an edge and leaves him with little to fight or get pounded!

daniel-craig-speedo12.jpgDaniel Craig’s physique is something to watch out for in Casino Royale and comes as something novel for the fans. He runs a lot in the movie chasing villains and one would have to say that the gentleman certainly looks in good shape!!

Another element which makes this movie stand out is with 20060216_bondgirl_evagreen.jpgregard to the lead actress Vesper Lynd. Played by Eva Green, the movie shows a romantic liaison between James Bond and Vesper. An acquaintance which blossoms into a romance, a romance with its own share of deceit, chicanery and love not to forget!

In other words, the movie is a foundation stone of sorts, a curtain raiser of the Bond to come, a Bond who might lack the suave touch and sophistication but would assure you of some sharp wit and fascinating action sequences in the movies to come!

So watch out the next time.. Bond’s back!
