England thrashed by Kiwis-World Cup ‘07

team2.jpg

England failed to defend their modest total of 210 against the Kiwis in the match at St.Lucia. Batting first the English batsmen got themselves in a hole in the initial overs losing quick wickets in the initial overs.
Kevin Pietersen bat.jpg
England opened with the left hand-right hand combination of Ed Joyce and Michael Vaughan but couldnt get off to a flyingpaul collingwood.jpg start as expected. Joyce departed early and the side then lost quick wickets. It was then left to Pietersen and Collingwood to rescue the team with a solid partnership in the middle overs. Pietersen made solid 60 runs while Collignwood gave him good company with a useful 31.
nixon.jpgThe team found some light at the end of the tunnellunkett.jpg with a more than useful partnership between wicketkeeper Paul Nixon and Liam Plunkett who made sure that the team crossed the 200 hundred mark with a mix of some lusty hitting and good running.

The Kiwi reply too didnt begin on a blazing note with the side styri.giflosing three wickets in the initial overs. But the New Zealand side buoyant from the 3-0 thrashing of the Aussies, carried forward the momentum and aggression and cruised along without losing any more wickets. It was the cumulative effort of Scott Styris and Jacob Oram who saw the team home in the 41st over itself with Styris scoring a fantastic 87 off 113 balls and Oram scoring 63 off 83 deliveries.

All in all, it was proved again that the team losing early wickets is bound to lose the advantage as it was clearly evident in the case of England. For a team batting first, the mantra’s got to be caution mixed with aggression, unfortunately for England the learnt worked on only one part of it and perished!

America Goes Green 2

America Goes Green 2

The ethanol boom is coming. The twin threats of climate change and energy security are creating an unprecedented thirst for alternative energy with ethanol leading the way. That process is set to reach a landmark on Thursday when the US President, George Bush, arrives in Brazil to kick-start the creation of an international market for ethanol that could one day rival oil as a global commodity. The expected creation of an “Opec for ethanol” replicating the cartel of major oil producers has spurred frenzied investment in biofuels across the Americas. - The Independant, 05 March 2007http://pointblank2006.blogspot.com/2007/03/america-goes-green-2.html

Windies thrash Pakistan in the opener - World Cup ‘07

pic1.jpg

West Indies made amends for the warm up performance against India and defeated Pakistan comprehensively by 54 runs in the opening match of the World Cup.

Pakistan sent the West Indies in after winning the toss andpic2.jpg pic1-5.jpgthe hosts made a cautious start. Chris Gayle departed early for two pouched behind the wickets by wicket keeper Akmal who had a busy day at the office! Sarwan and Chanderpaul steadied the innings with watchful shots interspersed with some scorchers!
marlon samuels.jpg

smith1.jpg

But the run rate slowed down and it required the Samuels and Lara partnership to get them back on track .Samuels made a classy 63 from 70 balls and his knock was punctuated by 3 sixes and 5 fours! Dwayne Smith also chipped in with some lusty hitting scoring 32 runs in just 15 balls. The Windies innings ended in a classic calypso fashion with a six from Collymore on the last ball of their innings!

The Pakistani innings too got off to a flier with a six off the very first ball by Imran Nazir who gave an indication of what younis khan.jpghe was capable of. But then the very next ball he edged a ball to the keeper also proving what heinzy.jpg was capable of! Younis Khan too departed early and then it was upto the captain Inzamam and Mohammad Yousuf to steer the ship. But Dwayne Smith spoiled their party as he picked up their wickets and let the ‘cat among the pigeons’!

The Pakistani team was bowled out in the 48 over with 54 runs required to win. The West Indies side used its bowlers in a better manner although Pakistan too choked the Windies while they batted with their spinners. But it all boiled down to handling the pressure and adapting to the conditions, which is where the hosts scored over Pakistan who failed to apply themselves, the classic statement to prove was the Younis Khan dismissal!

India thump Windies in warm up..World Cup’07

raina-irfan.jpg

The Indian team registered an emphatic victory over the hosts Windies in a warm-up game. The contest was supposed to be a even-steven affair but the West Indies team lived up to its expectations and came up with a mercurial display once again!

WI bowed II.jpg

Electing to bat after winning the toss, the Windies kept losinglara.jpg wickets right from the start. The openers were back in the pavillion even before the score crossed 20. Only Lara offered some resistance while the other batsmen failed to show any application and resilience.

The Indian bowlers on the other hand came up with a munaf.jpgdisciplined effort and were led by Munaf Patel whomunafII.jpg scalped four wickets for just 10 runs. Munaf is back from injury and looks fit for the World Cup. His fitness was a cause for concern but his performance in the warm up match would serve as an assurance to all Indian cricket fans! He bowled with great control and discipline not to mention the pace which was consistent all throughtout.

irfan_pathan01.jpgPatel was able supported by Irfan Pathan who gave glimpses of the same swing in his bowling that had gone missing a few months ago! He seems to have learnt his lessons well after sitting out for more than a month and playing domestic cricket!

Kumble, Agarkar and Zaheer Khan too gave a clinical display as the entire West Indies team was bundle for a paltry total of 86.

The Indian team’s cause for concern Virender Sehwag failed tosehwag out.jpg fire yet again. He got out in the trademark fashion fishing for a swining delivery outside the off stump and perished without troubling the score!! Dinesh Karthick and Robin Uthappa steadied the innings and finished off the match without any more hiccups.

Sehwag’s failure might increase the headache for the Indian team and the captain who has been backing him all throughout. He might need to be left alonf and it is upto Sehwag now to sort out his problems. It could be that he comes up with answers once the World Cup get underway.

World Cup Cricket 2007- team India

india cricket team.jpg

The team in blue is buoyant this time around in the Caribbean with two series win under its belt at home against the Lankans and the Windies. The batsmen are in good nick andtendlya2.jpg those injured are back in the squad. The team’s batting would revolve around its trio- Sachin, Dravid and Sourav who would lay the foundation of success in the Caribbean. The bowlers too are finding thesehwag bowled.jpg rhythm and there is a certain variety in the spin duo of Kumble and Harbhajan with some part time options in Sehwag. Sehwag though has still not proven his form and has one more chance to redeem his ’sword edge’ aggression in the practive game against the hosts on Friday. Led by the positive captain Rahul ‘ Wall’ Dravid, the team looks in good shape in this tournament.

Strengths- Solid experainced batsmen, good finishers, mixed pace and an loaded spin attack!
Weakness- Slow movers on the field,

Core

Rahul Dravid

rahul Dravid.jpg

The captain leads from the front when the team stares at adversity and that is what earns him the respect of the team. makes him a positive leader! A formidable player, he has a batting technique which is ‘text book’ in nature and most correct amongst today’s batsman. A versatile player, he can adapt to any situation with ease depending upon the circumstances. A true ‘TEAM’ man, he can bat anywhere in the batting order although he generally comes in the middle order lending solidity to it. Shouldering the responsibility of the entire team and representing a cricket crazy nation, he is one batsman to watch out for in this tournament.

Sachin Tendulkar
tendlya.jpg

The highest run getter in One Day Cricket, he is the ‘game’ by himself. One of the great batsman of all times, his sheer presence is a big morale booster for the team. Though injuries have taken some wind out of this great, he is back in the side with a renewed enthusiasm to boost the team’ssachin bowl.jpg campaign in Caribbean. A fine aggressive batsman up the order, he can also bat in the midlle order with relative ease. Apart from a gifted and talented batsman, he can also bowl with equal felicity and to be true, I have not seen a Indian spinner turn the ball as much as Tendulkar in both versions of the game. The hopes of a billion people are pinned on this master batsman who could be playing his last World Cup in Caribbean this time.

Sourav Ganguly
ganguly.jpg
Ganguly aka Dada, he is back in the Indian team with a bang after being in wilderness for an year. A fine left handeddada1.jpg batsman, Ganguly is the second highest run getter after Tendulkar in One Day cricket. An aggressive opener, he has reinvented himself in this one year by developing his leg side game too. He is a delight to watch when it comes to his off side shots which he plays through precise timing and thumpin arrogance. A useful bowler, Dada can be useful on seaming tracks and is said to have a golden arm!

Yuvraj Singh
yuvi3.jpg
A fantastic left handed batsman, he has proved himself as ayuvi.jpg finisher in the one day format of the game. A fabulous stroke maker, he has the gift of finding the gaps with precision, ease and power. Also an electric fielder in the infield, Yuvi has taken many memorable catches in the past.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni
dhoni.gif
This stockily built youth from Ranchi has an appetite for hitting boundaries and particularly sixes. A wicket keeper, he can be devastating down the order with his hard hitting shots. His presence lends depth to the side and also imparts balance.

Zaheer Khan
zaheer2.jpg
Zaheer looks a bowler with a purpose after his comeback into the Indian side. Plagued with injuries, he was out of the side for quite a while but has made a strong comeback as a fitter and stronger bowler.

Harbhajan Singh
harbhajan.jpg
The turbanator has been silent for a while and would be rearing to make an impression in this tournament. The tracksbhajji.jpg have shown signs of favoring the slow and spin bowlers and in this light, Harbhajan could be really effective. His turn and bounce have troubled batsmen all over the world and they would be vary of the Turbanator for sure!

Anil Kumble
anil3.jpg
Anil ‘Jumbo’ Kumble is playing his last World Cup and is all setanil4.jpg to exit from One day cricket. So, all the moreanil2.jpg reasons for him to be hungry for success! His forte his is discipline, line and length bowling which gives very little opportunities for the batsmen to score. A fantastic temperament, he is a spinner with the mindset of a fast bowler which makes him doubly effective!

The Indian team looks in good touch with Munaf Patel adding teeth to the pace battery along with the spinners. The batsmen have shown promise and to deliver in the matches ahead they need to gel as a unit. To win the championship, the team would have to do the basics correctly i.e, field, bat and bowl well!
