India thrash Bangladesh & win series ‘07

india-cricket-team.jpg

India reigned supreme in the second test match against host Bangladesh as they defeated them by an innings and 239 runs. Bangladesh played like a bunch if amateurs and reiterated the fact that in the shorter version of the games they could spring a few upsets here and there but when it came to the real test, they have a long way to go!

rahul_dravid_06.jpg

The host lost the initiative after winning the toss at Mirpur in Dhaka when they sent in India to bat. The Indians came out wasim-jaffer.jpgblazing with the new opening combination of Wasim Jaffer and Dinesh Karthik strking gold at the top of the order. Despitesachin.jpg hot and humid conditions the openers applied themselves well and came up with a stellar performance to complete their centuries. Jaffer made ammends for his ‘king pair ducks’ in the first test match by playing positively. Both batsmen grinded the opposition and made the most of the opportunity presented to them. Jaffer made 138 runs from 229 balls which had 17 boundaries while Karthik 129 runs from 212 balls with 16 boundaries. Jaffer fell to the conditions and was replaced by Dravid who too stamped his authority in the middle by striking a ton. His knock was the faster of the lot as he made 129 runs from 176 deliveries with as many as dinesh-karthik.jpg15 boundaries and a six. He was joined by Tendulkar who also scored a century. He madew 122 runs from 226 balls, a knock which had 8 boundaries and a six. Sachin’s knock had the least number of boundaries amongst the four top order centuries which shows that he applied himself and played to the conditions. He extended his record by scoring his 37th century, although once again his knock was more ‘with the wind’ types rather than ‘against the wind’ ! India’s top four batsmen scored a century each and set a world record

Bangladesh collapsed in their first innings as the entire side was bowled out for a paltry total of 118 runs. The batsmen looked in a hurry to score runs and played some reckless shots to get out. Only three batsmen could score in excess of 20 runs which goes to show the dismal performance that the hosts put up. S Hasan top scored for the Bangladeshis with 30 runs while the rest of the team’s batting performance was pretty ordinary.

Indians enforced follow-on after scutlling the hosts for 118. The performance of the Bangladeshis was nothing too great in the second innings although they played than their first innings. Opener Javed Omar got out in the same fashion and for the same score at the top. It was the standout innings of Mohammad Ashraful that stood out in the Bangladeshi scorecard that took the hosts to the total of 253 runs. He struck 12 boundaries and 2 sixes in his knock of 67 that came in 41 balls. He got some company from Rajin Saleh as the two batsmen got into a valuable partnership. Ashraful’s knock was special in the light of the dismal performance of the host. It had a streak of belligerence and had aggression written all over it. All the Indian bowlers received a flak from this batsmen who reached his half century in few balls.

anilkumble14.jpg

But the hosts did not display the tenacity or the perseverance that is required at the highest level of cricket- i.e. test cricket. They performed loosely and it was not a collective performance from a team. The batsmen appeared under the influence of one day cricket and lacked the application that would help them snatch a victory. The Indians on the other hand set some records and the batsmen got some good practice ahead of the upcoming tour to England. The seamers too stuck to their jobs on a docile pitch at Mirpur, in particular Zaheer Khan who took 8 wickets for the match! It was a special test for Anil Kumble as he reached 550 wickets in test cricket and entered the elite club of three bowlers! The visitors won the match and the series 1-0 under the leadership of captain Rahul Dravid and Ravi Shastri.

Indians could take lot of heart from this performance as they gear up for a hectic season coming up. Hope they are able to adapt to the conditions in England and other venues and produce similar results!

Indian Idol or Indian ‘Idle’?

indianidol.jpgA couple of days back I was surfing channels in my television and I stumbled upon the reality show Indian Idol on Sony TV. I would have to admit candidly that I am not a keen follower of the show and catch a glimpse of it now and then. After following it briefly for a while I got a bit disillusioned and surfed a few channels more and realized to my amazement that another entertainment channel ZEE TV too was airing a similar show by the name Sa Re Ga Ma Pa! I could not notice much difference in the format although there was some difference in the presentation and packaging of the shows. And if one thought that there were only two shows of similar kind, then I would like to turn his/her attention to Amul Star Voice Of India which is being aired on Star Plus on Friday and Saturday between 10 p.m. and 11 p.m. which follows the other two pretty closely in terms of its content and format. Whereas Sa Re Ga Ma Pa and Star Voice of India are aired in the same slot on Friday and Saturday between 10 p.m. and 11 p.m, Indian Idol on Sony is aired on Friday and Saturday at 9 p.m.

Objective achieved?

Before going any further, I would like to ask the reader as to who was the runner up in Indian Idol I and II? Many would even find it difficult to recollect the name of the winner of Indian Idol I or II ! So, one is put to wonder if such reality show imply ‘light at the end of the tunnel’ for aspiring playback singers or just another television audience phenomenon seeking to grab eye-balls with glossy presentation and gimmicks?

The deluge of reality shows on most of the channels like Star, Zee, Sony and many lingual channels such as Tamil, Bengali and others bring to the fore a few more questions-

  • What lies in store for the winners and runners up of the contest?
  • Does the victory mean a shortcut to success and stardom?

I am afraid the answer is No! What happened to Abhijit Sawant after his initial album which created some waves? He has receded into the same crowd where voices struggle and compete to get a shot at playback singing! Many a time, talented voices even get drowned or choose a more reasonable path!

Recently Karunyesh, Hemchander and another contestant from Indian Idol 2 performed in Hyderabad for a stage show. Even though reality shows might not get them instant fame or stardom, it nevertheless catapults them into another orbit- an orbit where they find more comfort and luxury by doing stage shows and singing at parties etc.

‘Too Many Cooks’ theory

The deluge of reality shows on television trying to unearth talent and magical voices has made me coin this ‘theory of too many cooks’ which also raises the question- How does the audience decide which one is the best? The irony of this entire affair is that all these shows take the same yardstick to measure the potential and talent of a contest.

The three shows mentioned above have a panel of judges- Indian Idol has Anu Malik, Alisha Chinai, Javed Akhtar and Udit Narayan. Alisha Chinai was herself cooling her heels after the initial break Made in India and came out from wilderness after she sung Kajra Re in Bunty aur Babli! While Anu Malik too has been going through a lean phase as far his creativity is concerned in music composition!

Amul Star Voice of India has singers Abhijeet, Alka Yagnik, and Music directors Jatin pandit and Lalit Pandit in their show as jury members while Sa Re Ga Ma Pa has a bunch of music directors like Himesh Reshammiya, Bappi Lahiri, Ismail Darbar and Vishal Shekhar forming ‘magical mentors’!

So when a viewer watches any one of the shows which run on similar lines, he or she is bound to get puzzled in deciding which is genuine and better than the other! The other side to this ‘too many cooks’ theory is the process of arriving at the winner for each show. The shows rely on the short service message or s.m.s from viewers from different parts of the country which exposes the fate of the contestants to the discrepancies and choice of the viewers. What it also does in turn is leave the fate of the contestants to certain latent and undisclosed aspects and questions like-

  • How genuine is the voting system and does it truly reflect the choice of the viewers?
  • How is the dispersion of the channels in different parts of the country? This means that if a particular channel is being received in a densely populated part then the chances of its being watched and get votes for the a particular reality show is more as compared to other channels. This in turn would mean more votes for a particular reality show on ‘X’ channel thereby reducing the margin share for its competitors
  • There also arises the case of viewership for a show in different parts of the country which again brings out anomalies. Certain contestants get votes based on a certain regional bias. So contrary to the opinion of the ‘judges’ it helps a less deserving candidate score over a better candidate thereby jeopardizing his fate!
  • This bias reared its ugly head in a reality show for children on Zee TV where a candidate received votes on compassionate grounds and a more deserving candidate was voted out by audience

So, the short listing of candidates is not subject purely to the talent of the individual but also relies on several other aspects which get lost in the glossy conduct of the show.

Even after going through the grind and pressure of surviving different tests and rounds there is no surety for the candidates about a lucrative opportunity on offer. And with more and more shows in the offing, the competition for opportunities starts after the reality show competition gets over! The format of the show is tough as it is a story of ‘fade out’ and struggle for those who reach the threshold of success and lose out; a disappointing story that is not aired or shown to the audience!

When one compares this scene with American Idol, the one thing that is distinctly clear is the integrity of the show, i.e. the show being a herald or pioneer in unearthing talent and not many shows exist to ape it! In terms of opportunities too, the gamut is much more for the American Idol winner due to the different genres like videos, groups, movies etc. So the probability of getting identified is more when an individual is presented with more avenues and opportunities as against plain playback singing!

With old playback singers in Bollywood and other movie industries holding sway in the film industry only time would tell how far do these idols get their fair share of credit in the music industry!
