Baba Ramdev’s Lost Cause

Yoga Guru Baba Ramdev was packed off by Delhi Police to Haridwar when he went on a fast to make the Government show resolve on bringing black money stacked abroad back to Indian shores. His followers who had gathered in large numbers at the Ramlila ground in Delhi were dispersed, all in a bid to diffuse the situation! Baba Ramdev had taken cudgels against the corrupt system much on the lines of Activist Anna Hazare but got embroiled in allegations and counter allegations from the Government. In the process, a cause which was noble fizzed out and lost steam leading one to ask whether the stand taken by the Government was justified?

Baba Ramdev over the years has made that yoga reached the multitude. By effectively using mass media, he has ensured that yoga reaches thousands of households. This in turn has also helped in establishing a ‘connect’ with the masses as well. And he used this ‘connect’ with the masses to precipitate and tap on the issue of bringing black money back to the country. By announcing that he would go on a fast, he used the platform of the masses to send a strong and loud message to the Government.

A sensitive issue like bringing black money back from tax havens has always been a dicey issue as there are countless Indians who have stacked up their wealth abroad including politicians and other affluent members of the society. Against this background, if Baba Ramdev’s initiative became a success then many individuals interest too would be hurt which could include a few within the Government as well.

So, with odds stacked heavily against the cause, it was ensured that things remained in control. The cause was diffused before it became a movement. Everyone cried foul. The Government made claims and allegations that Baba played a double role and kept things murky. The Baba camp cried foul accusing the Government of not sticking to its terms. Meanwhile, the ruling party introduced another angle of communal support from Hindu right wing organizations to the cause.

All of this eventually meant that the cause was defeated and once again the drama around Indian politics ensured that issues which matter to the nation such as black money continue to remain inside the cupboard!

The moment has finally come for which cricket lovers have been desperately waiting for the Grand Finale of 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup between India and Sri Lanka. Two giants from the sub-continent would be clashing to win this coveted crown for a second time. India won this cup way back in 1983 while Sri Lanka won it in 1996.

India beat arch rivals Pakistan in semi-finals while Sri Lanka won their semi-final match against New Zealand. It would be fair to say that the Sri Lankan team has not been tested so far and this might be one aspect that might be on that back of the team. The going has been easy so far for the Lankans who beat England in quarter finals. Having set a target of 231 runs, the Lankans cruised home without losing a wicket. The English were a depleted side without the likes of key players like James Anderson and Kevin Pietersen, both of whom were injured. In the semi-finals, they beat New Zealand rather comfortable in 48 overs with Tillakaratne Dilshan top scoring with 73 runs. It was a lack luster performance from the Kiwis who had upset favorites South Africa who choked again when the time came to deliver the goods!

India beat reigning champions Australia in the quarter-finals with good all round show from players like Yuvraj Singh who excelled both with the bowl and bat. Half century scores from Sachin Tendulkar, Gautam Gambhir and Yuvraj saw the team topple Australia to meet Pakistan in the semi-finals. The semi-final turned out to be a high pressure match for both the nations in which India comprehensively beat Pakistan which spilled chances and failed to get their act together on the field as well during batting. Glimpses of excellence were overshadowed by inexperience which reflected in some of the dismissal of the batsmen like Mohammad Hafeez. Indians kept pegging with wickets at crucial junctures with good bowling performance and beat Pakistan in all the department of the game to book a berth in the finals.

Both India and Sri Lanka have their set of strengths and weaknesses. India has been dependent on the starts provided by their top three batsmen in most part of the tournament. Sachin Tendulkar continues to play like he is still 16 years old while Virender Sehwag has been at his usual explosive best. The middle order has depth but looks a little brittle with Yuvraj being the lone consistent performer with the bat. The bowling has the likes of Zaheer Khan who is getting with age though he might miss out on support as Ashish Nehra might not play the finals due to an injured finger. This would mean the return of Sreesanth which in turn could mean an Achilles Heel in the Indian bowling attack. The spin department has Harbhajan Singh and Yuvraj too seems to be finding some rhythm so it would be a relatively balanced attack, an attack that promises but whether it delivers the goods against the potent Sri Lankan batting line up would have to be seen!

Sri Lanka on the other hand too have a strong opening pair in Upul Tharanga and Dilshan who have both plundered runs in the competition. The middle order is a concern for the team as seasoned campaigner Mahela Jayawardene has not fired yet. The team grapples with injury woes as all rounder Angelo Mathews has been ruled out of the finals which would mean the team might bring Nuwan Kulasekara for the finals.

The finals would be remembered for two players who would be playing their last World Cup and both being achievers who set countless milestones for others to follow- Muralidaran and Sachin Tendulkar. Muralidaran who mesmerized batsmen with his off unconventional spin bowling and doosra would want to make the most of the final. Sachin who is one century away from 100 international century would be looking forward to finish on a memorable note.

Either ways, it would be an enthralling encounter. It is difficult to pick a side but my heart goes with India!

The stage is all set for the clash of the titans in 2011 ICC (International Cricket Council) Cricket World Cup. India will meet arch rivals Pakistan on Wednesday,30^th March 2011 while Sri Lanka will clash with New Zealand on Tuesday, 29^th march 2011.

Well, India vs Pakistan contest is already being touted as the battle of two giants. Both the countries have had a good tournament so far with India registering a solid victory over reigning champions Australia. Pakistan on the other hand knocked out West Indies in the quarter finals.

India is being pegged as the hot favorites to win this World Cup being the host nation. But one cannot rule out Pakistan who on their day can pull out a few surprises. Both teams have their fair share of strength and weaknesses. Batting has come good for India in this world Cup with the likes of Sehwag, Sachin and Yuvraj. Yuvraj has been the surprise package in this World Cup showing his form with both bat and bowl. He looks more settled and seems to have matured with age. In the quarter final match against Australia he scored a half century as well as picked up a couple of wickets. Bowling has been mainly been spearheaded by Zaheer Khan while others have been found to be wanting. This could be the Achilles heel for India even though it would be looking plug all the gaps. For Pakistan, batting has been rather unsteady with performances coming in from different quarters. Bowling has been one of the strengths for the team as it has a potent spin attack in the form of Shahid Afridi , Saeed Ajmal and part timer Hafeez. The pace department has old warhorse Shoaib Akhtar who looks like a Ford Mustang, still revving some horse power though age seems to have caught up with him along with Umar Gul. For sure it would be a keenly fought and watched contest across the world.

New Zealand’s clinical performance against South Africa showed that the Kiwis cannot be ruled out. Their spirited all round effort with bat, ball as well as fielding has seen them through to the semi-finals of the World Cup. The team does not have a stand out performer which could work in their favor as well as against them. Batting has a couple of name like Ross Taylor and Jesse Ryder but their mercurial performances could also be a cause for worry. Bowling department is led from the front by ace leg spinner Daniel Vettori who has been good company by Nathan McCullum. It would have to be a combination of all round performance which would help Kiwis advance to the next round. New Zealand would be facing Sri Lanka who stormed home yesterday with an excellent win over England. The English side looked depleted without the likes of James Anderson and Kevin Pietersen, their key players. This reflected both in their batting as well as bowling. The Englishmen were never allowed to gather momentum and throughout the fifty overs they looked like an elephant tethered by iron chains by Sri Lankans. They posted 229 -6 and it appeared they fell short in posting a formidable total for the Lankans. This turned out to be true as the Lankans cruised home in mere 39 overs with all their wicket intact. This was a humiliating defeat for the English team indeed which looked to salvage some pride. But opening batsmen Tharanga and Dilshan made sure that there were no hiccups in the run chase and everything went on smoothly.

So, the countdown has four teams- India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and New Zealand. It would be difficult to predict the winners but sub-continent advantage might favor Lankans over the Kiwis. it would be tooth and nail fought contest between India and Pakistan both of whom have had a long acrimonious cricketing history. This clash would have more importance to both the teams irrespective of winning the cup! So, 30^th of March, the roads will be desolate, traffic would come to a standstill and people would be glued to their television sets praying for their respective teams. All hell cuts loose on this day! Watch out..

Some mandals such as LalBaugcha Raja, Ganesh Galli , GSB and others alike in the Mumbai city are famous for their effigies as they have a legacy and lineage which have been carried forward over the years while other mandals are visited to witness the novelty of effigies. Talking of tall, the Ganesha effigy of Ganesh Galli was the tallest among the lot. The approach to the Lord has been built like a Mysore Temple with the Nandi Bull right in front of the temple. One could see the height of the deity after entering the premises and the very sight of the towering Ganesha with three hands left devotees and visitors amazed and spellbound with awe.

Countless edifices of Lord Ganesha are strewn across the city imparting a sense of sanctity to the environs. The Lord would be worshiped for 11 to 13 days following which the edifices would be carried with the same fervor by devotees who would shout chants of Ganapati Bappa Moraya and immerse their deities in the sea. Thus would begin another long wait of one year for the devotees and Mumbaikaars when they welcome their Lord next year!

Commonwealth Games 2010 (CWG) or Corruption Games in India?

Many would have thought that hosting the Commonwealth Games in India would bring the country on the radar of the world. It sure has brought India on the radar – but for all the wrong reasons!!

Following an expose on widespread corruption in the Organizing Committee (OC) by news channels, it seems a can of worms has been opened for the organizers of this event as well as for the Government. Several dubious deals, phantom contracts and issues of mismanagement have been unearthed and several are still inside the cupboard waiting to see the light of the day! Even after such expose, the question that remains is -Would the common man learn about the entire truth as most of it still remains a mystery?

Also, one needs to ask is- Did it require a TV expose for the Government to wake up to all this mismanagement? The answer sadly is a YES! Despite an Organizing Committee (OC) in place, the rot had set deep within it for it to function without bias and corruption. Apart from this, lack of checks, a body to oversee the OC on the management, allocation and flow of funds. The dubious nature pertaining to the awarding of contracts too contributed to this rot. The highhandedness of the organizing committee was such that companies with vague and ambiguous credentials such as office addresses pitched in for contracts and tenders. Leave aside pitching, some of them won the contracts too involving huge sums. Nobody checked the credentials of these ambiguous companies and they made merry!

What could have encouraged for such widespread mismanagement to occur was the offenders having a sound understanding of the system and the way it works in India. The laxity on the part of law to round up and reprimand the guilty with severe punishment along with unending legal procedures too could have aided the intentions of the guilty. All said and done, the entire ruckus could not have been orchestrated with just one individual but appears to involve a bevy of individuals!

Absence of KRA for the OC with stringent penalties for non-achievement of the fixed deliverables could have lent some seriousness to the efforts which now looks like an apparition. Absence of accountability both at the financial and infrastructure level has been one the primary reasons for this debacle which has seen the conscience of officials nose dive to new nadirs!

With less than a month to go for the games to begin, it is indeed sorry state of affairs as far as organizing the games is concerned. Construction is still on in many stadiums, infrastructure is struggling to keep pace with the schedule and to top it over there are officials whose dubious deals are baffling the State and Central Government. Flooding in Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, leaking roofs in wrestling arena are just a few examples of what stands today in the in the half completed stadiums. The gravity of the situation is such that the Prime Minister has had to intervene and impart integrity to the sorry state of affairs of the infrastructure.

The entire world recently witnessed a sporting gala event in the Football World Cup hosted and organized excellently by South Africa. This was an event which was much larger in magnitude compared to the Commonwealth Games but still it was organized in a praiseworthy manner. The event also ended up earning the goodwill of millions of tourists who would visit the nation following the commendable hospitality and treatment they received from the various quarters.

As against this event, would be the Commonwealth 2010 fiasco (which is already mired in controversies) comes across as a stark contrast. It would take a colossal effort for the OC and Government to complete the work and make it world class.

Well, the damage has been done and the best that could be done now is damage control. But just think-as citizens who pay taxes, don’t you think the guilty need to be punished for the mess and spending the common man’s earnest earnings for his profits

FIFA 2010 World Cup : Forthcoming Semi-Finals Clash

Battle lines have been drawn semi-final clash at FIFA 2010 football world Cup in South Africa. Uruguay vs Netherlands would be the first of the semi-final on 7th July 12:00 a.m. (India Time) while Germany take on Spain in the second semi-finals on 8th July 12:00 a.m. (India Time).

In the first match of the two semi-finals, Netherlands would be favorites to make it to the final. But the way things have gone till now (Brazil knock out!), it would be difficult to make a prediction about the winner. In the second semi-finals, Germany appears to have an upper hand given the rock solid performance against Argentina. Nevertheless Spain would be rearing to leave a lasting impression with David Villa and Torres.

Both the encounters would be interesting particularly the Germany Vs Spain as fans would be expecting a hard fought match as lots is at stake for the teams.
Outcome of quarterfinals Uruguay defeated Ghana in the quarterfinals in the penalty shootout to make a place for themselves in the semi-finals. Both teams ended up with one goal apiece in the quarterfinals and penalty shootout was needed to decided the winner. Ghana star Asamoah Gyan failed to convert his chance as the team failed in their bid to make it to the semi-finals.

In the other quarter finals, Netherlands pulled an upset over hot favorites Brazil by defeating them by 2-1. The match was closely fought but for the lone goal which was dubbed as a self goal for Brazil that made the difference. This Brazil side was different from the earlier sides which had flair, flamboyance and entertained the crowd with pace. The Brazil side which played in 2010 FIFA World Cup under coach Dunga looked distinctly different from the previous sides bereft of stars like Ronaldinho and others along with the above elements, the side was to look like ‘new wine in a new bottle’! Unfortunately, the experiment did not work for Dunga and the side failed to make it to the semi-finals leaving its fans shocked across the world. Unlike the Brazil which sailed past teams with its pace and ‘a touch above the rest’ play, this side looked human and susceptible and eventually capitulated. All that the millions of Brazil fans around the world could pray for is that Brazil get back to their old ways of ‘beautiful football’ and take the team back to the pinnacle.

Germany Vs Argentina was one match which was expected to be a cracker. And cracker it was for Germany as they thrashed Argentina 4-0. It appeared to a classic case of setting the ‘cat among the pigeons’ as the Argentina forgot the meaning of the word defence during the game. The very first goal by Mueller brought out the gaping hole in Argentinian defence which only went only to become more miserable with the passage of time. Meanwhile Miroslav Klose exploited the lackluster effort and scored two more goals which sealed the fate of Germany. Germans appeared a team well prepared for the game with a game plan to win while Argentina appeared lost and completely as sea. Messi, the player to watch out for turned out to be a damp squib failing to prove his mettle through the tournament. The usually animated Maradona appeared to be a quiet spectator as if awaiting the carnage. The Argentina team was short of ideas. It also proved the adage that not all great players make good coaches as in the case of Maradona. It is about practice, team effort and believing in a unit rather than in a few individuals!

Spain vs Paraguay too ended up as expected as Spain made a place for themselves with a goal from their star performer in the FIFA 2010 World Cup David Villa. The scoreline read 1-0 good enough to send Spain through to the semi-finals.

Now, with the four semi-finals decided, one would have to wait and watch to see the final two teams to clash for the coveted World Cup 2010.

The first of the quarterfinal match between Netherland and Brazil would be a treat to watch. Brazil would be looking to topple the Dutch with some aggressive and clinical counter attacking moves while the Dutch would be looking to hold their fort. For Brazil Luis Fabiano and Elano have been among the goals and one cannot discount the presence of Kaka on the field. The Dutch have an equally potent arsenal in Van Persie and Arjen Robben would have come across as potent threats to the opposition defence. One cause of concern for the Dutch however would be the fact that both of them have received yellow cards and would have to play cautiously against Brazil in the quarterfinal World Cup match.

Ghana would be looking to create history by entering the semis beating Uruguay. However this might not be as easy as it appears. Though both the teams were not reckoned to finish in the penultimate round with the presence of heavyweights like England and Italy, they would have to try hard to prove their critics wrong. Diego Forlan for Uruaguay would be looking to peak in this critical game and cause a few upsets whereas Ghana would be looking forward to Asamoah Gyan to deliver the goods for them!

The match of great significance form the point of qualificaton and energy wouild be the Argentina Vs Germany game. With two giants of the football world clashing, it would be difficult to predict hte winner. Both the teams have have a strong campign so far with Argentina breezing past its opponents with strong perfomances and goal difference. Germany on the other hand had a relatively slow start but gained momentum with time. Their 4-1 win over England gave them the perfect lauchpad to their quarterfinal campaign. This match would go down to the wire if both the teams play to their potential.

The last of the quarterfinals, Spain Vs Paraguay would be a match which could be incline in favour of Spain which has come across as a formidabble team. With players like David Villa in prime form, Spain would be hot favorites in the game. But having said that, one cannot discount Paraguay’s chances too as they have also performed well in the tournament.

All said and done, fans around the world would be geared up for a thrilling weekend with lot of World Cup Football action.
