Ireland were whitewashed by Sri Lanka in their Super 8 encounter today. The match turned out to be a one sided affair as Sri Lanka scuttled the Irish team for a paltry total.
Batting first, Ireland got hiccups right from the word go as they lost wickets at regular intervals. At the start Maharoof caused problems for the Irish batsmen as he picked up the first four wickets. The came the Murali magic as the spinner castled the inexperianced Irish batsmen with his spin bowling and picked up four wickets in the process. The Sri Lankans fielded a full side today making ammends for the mistake they committed against the Aussies. The Irish team could not stand for long and surrendered for a total of a meagre 77 runs!
The Lankans came blazing much like the South Africans yesterday and wrapped up the match within 10 overs in style. Captain Jayawadene and Sanath Jayasuriya finished the innings as the total was chased in exactly 10 overs!
A good thumping win for the Lankans ahead of the semi- finals while an ignominous exit for Ireland which had shown some sparks of belligerence in the previous matches.
